Wynn hotel technology not up to potential
Still impressed by LCD televisions, fast Internet access, and phones with digital displays? No? Neither are we,
natch. Especially after Steve Wynn (you know, Mirage and Bellagio) sunk nearly $3 bizillion into the newly opened Wynn Hotel in Vegas baby, Las Vegas. PC Magazine was there to geek-out in pharoahic opulence, and between comped rounds of drinks at the $5 hold'em table, they had time to discover that the entire architecture, from guest check-in to the rooms to the casino, runs on XP and is all interconnected. So if one system goes down, they all go down. Hmmm, any Linux fans want to take odds on what happens next? Well, it only took a few days before the slots crashed locking guests out of their rooms. The joint also "features" an underutilized VoIP system, HDTV (without the HD feeds),
multi-MB (tethered) Internet access, and room keys that double as your slot cards (hey, that's using the noodle trix).
As much as we'd like to take Wynn down a peg or two, we're pretty sure all this regulartechness is the doings of his CIO, who when asked why the Internet access was so fast, beamed back "we built it from scratch, using Cat 6." Oh, if only life was so simple. Well, at least the clock radio has a cable for your MP3 player.
