Is your hard drive lying to you?

The check is in the mail, one-size fits all, 1KB = 1,000Bytes – all famous
lies, the last of which is a favorite amongst hard drive manufactures.  Well...they've got a new one.  Slashdot is reporting that Brad Fitzpatrick (of LiveJournal fame)
has written a utility (which requires pulling the plug on your computer!) to see if you too, are a patsy.  It seems manufacturers are risking your data in order to score higher on performance benchmarks by not always obeying the fsync function (which takes time to write cached data to disk). If power is cut, the cached data is gone. To be fair,
an accusatory finger might also be pointed at those writing the drivers who should understand how the game is played.
Regardless, we won't be letting any smarmy drive manufacturers put anything in our mouths.
