Tracking wildlife via their SIM cards
Cheaper than satellite, cell phone technology is revolutionizing animal tracking. You can already
SMS your elephant via GSM/GPS collars, but now a new system promises far cheaper tracking using cellphone SIM cards. A trial is set for next month that will enable researchers to track dolphins off the coast of South Africa. Let's just hope they don't start
blingin' their new collars with squid and anchovies. There is a limit, however, to SIM tracking's usefulness at sea since signals generally only reach about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) offshore. But the technology will be a boon inland with Africa rapidly going wireless.
