Intel CEO says "If you want security tomorrow, buy a Mac"
My pal Mike thinks that Paul Otellini, the new CEO of Intel might be forced to consider a new career. Why? The Wall Street Journal reports in their D3 summary that when "pressed about security by Mr. Mossberg, Mr.
Otellini had a startling confession: He spends an hour a weekend removing spyware from his daughter's computer. And when further pressed about whether a mainstream computer user in search of immediate safety from security woes ought to buy Apple Computer Inc.'s Macintosh instead of a Wintel PC, he said, 'If you want to fix it tomorrow, maybe you should buy something else.'" This was in the context of a discussion regarding hardware-based security solutions for Wintel clients, which Otellini says are "still a few years away."
Heh... maybe there's something to the Apple on Intel rumors after all!
An hour a week removing spyware? That's just crazy. And this isn't some average Joe who doesn't even know what spyware is, how it got there or how to get rid of it – this is a technology professional. The mind boggles, indeed.
UPDATE: Josh sent a timely tip pointing out a link that several people also sent me yesterday, which echoes Otellini's security sentiments. Check out the Mad As Hell series (here's part 1) at the Security Awareness blog for one security professional's explanation of why he and his company switched to Mac. Now we just need a few million more IT managers to agree and we'll be hearing "Micro who?"
