Z Machine fires bullets faster than Earth
Whoa cowboy, careful now 'cause Sandia National Labs has the fastest gun on the planet — able to fire bullets faster than the Earth moves through space. That's 50-times faster than a rifle bullet, 'k Uncle Fester? Sure, the 850-microns thick bullets (ok, plates as they like to call them) only travel 5-millimeters, but the impacting shock wave can reach 15 million times atmospheric pressure. Golly. Now the obvious application of this is to help us understand how superman is able to stop time by reversing the earth's rotation, but those brainiacs at Sandia say the Z will help scientists understand the extreme conditions within giant planets like Saturn and Jupiter, accelerate the availability of unlimited atomic energy, and provide information about the condition of the U.S. nuclear stockpile without having to vaporize poor Bikini Atoll again.
