Stringer approved by Sony shareholders, lays out vision for company
Sony CEO
Sir Howard Stringer was overwhelmingly approved by
the company's shareholders today, and wasted no time in laying out his plans for the company. Stringer said that
he and new president Ryoji Chubachi will spend the summer reviewing the company's operations, and will come up
with a restructuring plan by September. "We have to make choices, and that is why this summer we will get together
and decide what the company's priorities ought to be," Stringer said, hinting that the company could scale back
its presence in sectors where the company's performance has been less-than-stellar (hey, Howard, here's a hint:
how about ditching the division that works on
DRM?) Stringer also acknowledged the realities that come with heading a Japanese company. While he had a free
hand in the U.S., and used it to slash thousands of jobs, he said that "I know I cannot use an axe in Japan."
Looks like the guy who keeps greenlighting new
MiniDisc players is safe for now.
