Weekend wrap up: iPod wishlist
Earlier this week, I asked what features you'd like to see in the next generation iPod. A number of you wished for a podcast option right in the main menu. I'd like this myself, and in fact I'd be surprised if we didn't see it. Also, requests for an AM/FM receiver were made a few times, as well as a request to make the remote standard equipment (I agree!). Some more of your responses follow.
Porchland mentioned nested folders, and I think this makes perfect sense. They're so useful in iPhoto and iCal, and such groupings would make navigation much easier. More after the jump.
Jon suggests, "I'd like to see a switch like the one on the shuffle for repeat/shuffle/linear playback. It's a pain to have to go to the settings menu whenever I want to turn off shuffle mode." Yes, now you're thinking! I can't use the "shuffle" option in the main menu, as I've created a specific random playlist to exclude the iTrip stations,
kids' music, etc. A switch like this would suit me just fine.
Tim writes, "I think that the future of the iPod is in video. The fact that iTunes introduced the ability to store videos is a big hint.
I think that having a super thin, hard drive based video player would be great. The screen should cover almost the entire front. A simple iPod scroll wheel should also be on it. The only fear about this is that Apple may lock down the video capabilities. They may make it so you must get movies from there store and you can't use the videos you already have (think PSP...). All in all, I think the iPod could become anything in the upcoming years, I just hope it is not full of DRM."
The whole video pod idea pops up every now and then. I have to say, I
can't see myself watching anything on that teeny, tiny screen. Even if it is something as meaningful as one of my kids. The beauty of the iPod as a musical device is that you can listen to music while doing something else. Walking to school, doing some work, riding the bus,
etc. Watching a movie is a much more demanding activity, and as such I
can't see it as part of the iPod's future. But what do I know. It's fun to guess like this, and I'm sure we'll see soon enough.
