Philips working on $20 cellphone
Philips is responding to Motorola's announcement that they're working on a $40 cellphone with news that they're working on a reference design for a GSM handset that should retail for less than a Jackson. It'll probably be a little while until they start actually producing the phones (or rather until someone else builds the phones, since they'll likely be licensing the reference design to other manufacturers), which are said to be SMS-capable and have a monochrome display, but don't ever expect to see them here in the US. The phones are intended mainly for sale in developing markets, even though we know more than a few people over here who wouldn't mind owning a cheap cellphone that only did phone calls.
