Weekend wrap up: iPhone
Earlier this week, among all of the iPhone rumors, we asked if any of you dear readers would use an iTunes capable phone. iPods do a wonderful job of playing digital music, why do I need a phone to do the same thing, with significantly less storage capacity to boot? Perhaps I'm just missing the big picture, the cell phone really is the next big platform, and Apple is smart enough to see an opportunity to license its technology. We asked, you answered. Here are some of your responses.
Brian writes, "I would buy one the moment that they are released. The music would be nice, but even more then that I would hope that all of the other syncing would work awesome with address book, ical, etc. And if they bluetooth features are completely unlocked it would make me buy it even faster...I guess I'm trying to say that I would buy it quickly because I anticipate that it would play nice with Macs." I can certainly agree with this. Knowing for sure that your new phone will be compatible with your Mac as soon as you get it out of the box is a big selling point.
More after the jump.
Tim writes, "This just feels like Step One in the ultimate convergence of iPod, phone, PDA and, maybe, radio. Why carry three devices, when you can carry one? Phones and PDAs are converging already. Now we need someone like Apple to moosh the whole mess together and – here's the important part – make it easy." This was my initial thought, too. Over the next couple of years, will we see the iPod and iPhone merge into a single device? I'm as big a tech geek as the next guy, and even I don't like carrying several devices. I'd be curious to see if this prediciton comes to fruition.
Ruju, however, makes the contradicting point: "Currently I would say that I would not purchase an iTunes phone. This is not due to a dislike of iTunes or anything else, but moreso because I am of the opinion that an all-in one-copier does a lot of things crappy, as opposed to just a copier that copies well but doesn't do much more than that." That's pretty much how I feel, Ruju. I have a friend with one of those printer/copier/fax/scanner deals and I really don't like it. First off, it's roughly the size of a Volkswagen, cumbersome and just seems to be "trying too hard."
The majority of you, however, said you'd snap one right up. With Apple's blessing, you know it will work well, and play nice with your Mac. I'm still unconvinced, but I'd LOVE for Apple to prove me wrong.
