Are you ready to get Amp'd? Pick one: Yes/no/maybe
The NYTimes has a little something about Amp'd Mobile,
which, if you can get past the cloyingly Gen-Y name, is a new wireless carrier (technically they're a Mobile Virtual Network Operator, or MVNO, but whatever) launching later this year that wants to bring
EV-DO to the young people. Probably not a ton of teens out there who want a high-speed wireless data connection for downloading email or accessing their corporate VPN, so instead Amp'd is focusing squarely on multimedia, and are going to offer stuff like music, video downloads, streaming TV, 3D games, ringtones, a dating service, etc. That content mix doesn't sound all that different from what Verizon is currently offers with V Cast, so it's really going to come down to marketing and pricing and they're already talking about selling the phones (which'll be made by Kyocera and Motorola, even though that's an
LG VX8000 in the pic accompanying the article) for around a hundred bucks. Still no word on when they'll start offering service, but it'll likely be sometime before the end of the year.
