Turn that $30 DVD into the player of your dreams
Can it really be true that you can bust open one of those $30 WalMart DVD players and add "less than $100 in boutique parts" to create the Bran Van 3000 DVD player of your hi-fi dreams? Well, you can as long as the box features a decent laser mechanism and rock-solid digital processing chips. Or so says Robert McNeice (audiophile and self-professed...er, "tweaker") who fesses up about his experience modding a $100 Toshiba to create a player he says sounds and looks like a player costing significantly more.
Warning: warranty voiding soldering and life-ending exposure to high-voltage (yes, the current too) may be required. In other words, it's a hack just the way we likes it.
