Can video games and religion mix?

Finally, a video game controversy not about Grand Theft Auto. Chris Morris' weekly CNN
column on video games has hit on a taboo not recently tackled: the lack of religious representation in video games.  Sure, there are the god games – Black and White, for example – but very rarely can one find a game specifically designed for religious education or even entertainment.  The article makes good points on how this is a problem caused by both parties – the game publishers for shying away from the controversy (for once), and the church leaders for not yet embracing video games as a possible way of bringing their message to a vaster audience.  Moral decisions in video games rarely amount to affecting any bit of a game's experience, save for a few standouts such as Fable, Ultima, and maybe to an extent Fallout.

What do you think?  Could an RPG about Genesis appeal to the mass audience if done tastefully enough?
