PS3 to wait until 2007? One analyst thinks it could happen

With all this talk to day of Xbox 360 – a price cut here, a credit card there – here comes GameSpot with some interesting speculation on Sony's business strategy.  One analyst predicts that, if the 360 does not become a giant success, Sony might spend the 2006 year earning profits from $99 slim line PS2 which, due to small production costs, will actually still give Sony a profit with each console sold.  With the time, Sony could stock up on PS3's so as to avoid a shortage in late 2006/early 2007.

I could see this happening – the analyst does make a good point, unless Nintendo pulls out surprise success and causes Sony to panic and release the new console early.  However, all this is banking on the Xbox 360 having a less-than-stellar debut, which I am not thinking will be a chance.  The hype machine is too big on it, if the price is chosen correctly.
