Missouri man arrested for camcording bad movies
The movie industry has a new weapon to use against video
pirates, and they're not afraid to use it. Curtis Salisbury of Missouri (not pictured) has become the first person
to be arrested under a new law that makes it a crime to videotape movies when they're shown in theaters. Salisbury
reportedly camcorded "The Perfect Man" and "Bewitched" and then tried to sell the copies online (yeah, we're
surprised that anyone would consider paying for bootlegs of these flicks, especially ones cammed from a theater
screen). While the new law doesn't seem entirely unreasonable (it's not like pointing a camcorder at the screen in
a theater can be justified under fair use), we still worry that it could be used to justify excesses like the
recent cameraphone ban that the Edinburgh Film
Festival put in place.
