Neptec Laser Camera System checks space shuttle problems
DigitalCameraInfo.com has some more details on the imaging system used to diagnose potential problems on the space shuttle Discovery. The Laser Camera System developed by Canadian company Neptec uses a series of lasers to scan the exterior of the shuttle and render 3D models accurate to a few millimeters, regardless of lighting conditions
(which is pretty important in space). The system found a small hole on the shuttle tiles caused by falling insulating foam, but NASA determined that it was not a threat.
