Sony debuts 50-inch DS-R60XBR1 and 60-inch KDS-R50XBR1 rear projection HDTVs
While flat-panel displays may get all the buzz, that hasn't stopped Sony from continuing to update its Grand WEGA
rear-projection HDTVs. The latest models include the 50-inch DS-R60XBR1 and 60-inch KDS-R50XBR1. Both are powered by Sony's Silicon X-tal Reflective Display (SXRD) panels and offer 1920 x 1080 resolution and a contrast ratio of 5000:1.
They're also CableCARD ready and have integrated tuners. Of course, they're priced at levels that put them into plasma and LCD territory: $5K for the 60-incher, and $4K for the 50. And at over 100 pounds each, you're not going to hang these on your wall. On the other hand, when you start talking 60 inches, your options are pretty limited, and there are even fewer choices when you start looking for specs like these. Just do your back a favor and put your home theater on the first floor.
