1up chronicles the maturation of gaming
Did anyone else feel a bit odd when Sega announced that Shadow the Hedgehog would get his own game and that he would actually be wielding a gun? To me, Sonic games were always of the
"jump on the bad guy's head to destroy them" variety. 1up, purveyors of very thoroughly researched and interesting features, have a history report (of sorts) on how video games have matured over the years. I never realized to what extent Nintendo censored its games in the United States in order to avoid public outcry, which had a big hand in giving the Big N its kiddy image. I understand their rationale for it now, and I kind of feel bad – being the first big video game company in America means having the most scrutiny, but censoring the red crosses? No mentions of death allowed? I
had no idea.
It is fun to be reminded of the whole Mortal Kombat controversy; I loved using the blood code in the Genesis version.
I highly recommend this as a read, and, of course, we'd love it if you came back and posted your thoughts.
