Wireless HDTV camera system from Link
At long last, the wireless solutions for high-definition cameras needed by the networks are appearing. Remember when I ranted about CBS's HD coverage of the PGA last month because the roving cameras were not high def? This LinkHD wireless camera system should go a long to way to making sure that won't happen again. The switching between HD and SD coverage made me feel like I needed to switch my eyeglass prescription every five seconds!
The LinkHD attaches to any camera with an HD-SDI output and only has a 100ms video delay. The transmitter doesn't downconvert the signal to SD at any point in the process, so a full high-def signal is maintained throughout the transmission. For sporting events, this innovation is exactly what the doctor ordered.
High-def coverage in a fixed area isn't a problem; it's when the cameras have to move around for the event that's the challenge. Hopefully CBS picks some of these up before next year's PGA. My eyes aren't equipped to go from 1080i to 480i in the blink of a....well, you know.
