Sony getting ready to restructure
Sonys first non-Japanese CEO, Sir Howard Stringer, is all set to unveil his master plan for the company on Thursday,
a plan which is expected to include a massive corporate restructuring that would pare Sony down from five operating companies to three and narrow the focus of its electronics biz to a smaller number of core products (including Blu-ray,
the PS3, and anything that might compete with the iPod). Probably long overdue — it's a total cliché, but Sony really has been something of a lumbering giant for the past several years — but there's some speculation that in the process of getting leaner and meaner Sony is going to break our hearts and jettison its robotics business. Yeah, their robotics biz has always been more about building brand identity than making money, but that'd also mean a world without
Aibos and
Qrios, m'friends.
