Photorealism in games: a friend… or foe?

"David Hayward... considers the pros and cons of
the neverending push towards absolute reality in video game graphics... and comes to the conclusion that all in all it's probably worthwhile."

Our definition of next-gen visuals is constantly put to the test (and further upgraded) when examining the latest screenshots and videos released to (or simply bootlegged for) the public.

When will the escalation cease? Or will achieving a certain threshold of photorealism enable us to be more comfortable with artful, but perhaps less "realistic" visual styles?
