Nokia and Ericsson considering 450MHz spectrum for GSM
As if what we really needed to add to our quad-band dual-mode 3G DMB phone's repertoire was support for yet another swath of spectrum, but it looks like we might have to get it anyway—at least if we're interested in taking a trip to developing nations in the near future. Less because things are gettin' crowded up in the 800 / 900 / 1900 / 1900 /
2100MHz zones than because the lower on the spectrum you get the more powerful you can make your signal with less worry of noise and interference; 450MHz wirelessrequires fewer towers and thus costs less to roll out, ideal for developing nations. For that very reason Ericsson (that'd be their infrastructure biz outside Sony Ericsson, natch) and Nokia are both apparently eyeballing the possibilities in 450MHz deployments. Not exactly out of the realm of feasibility in the near future, too, what with already existent limited deployments of 450MHz networks in some lower-income South American nations.
