Samsung's new LCD panel sans color filter

Samsung just took the wraps off their new 32-inch LCD panel,
which is the largest panel yet without a color filter. The new panel also incorporates an LED backlight, which is definitely continuing a trend. LED backlights consume much less power; in this case, the LED
backlight consumes 82 watts,
which is 60% less than a standard fluorescent backlight. Contrast is not an issue either, as the new panel's contrast is a 1,000:1 ratio.

The backlight in the new panel is an RGB-emitter backlight that sends light in precise sequences to help with color saturation. The RGB light eliminates the need for the standard color filter. Watch for the same technology application in Samsung's larger 40- and 46-inch panels going forward.
