MPEG-4 transition ain't gonna be easy
Not if I'm reading this article
right that is. As a Dish Network customer it caught my eye that the current MPEG-2 set-top-boxes just won't work with MPEG-4. See, I
figured the newer hard-drive PVR boxes would be upgradeable, but it sure
doesn't sound like it. The way I see it, all of the Dish Network boxes need to be swapped and that won't come cheap nor will it be quick.
Funny thing is: VOOM customers had set-top boxes that were already MPEG-4 compatible. We already know that VOOM went dark earlier this year, only to be resurrected by Dish Network. Perhaps
some synergies can be achieved here for MPEG-4, but that's unlikely considering VOOM's install base is far lower than Dish's eleven-million customers. Oh...Kevin is not a happy Dish customer right now.
