Apple pulls out of Samsung flash memory joint-venture

Samsung 16 gigabit chip

Damn, we knew that people in Korea were pissed at Samsung for their recent, uh, corporate malfeasance (price fixing and other corporate scandals), but we didn't know it was bad enough for Apple to pull out of a proposed $3.8 billion joint-venture to build flash chips for portable devices. Reuters reports that Apple had proposed the venture, but pulled out because of growing "anti-Samsung sentiment" among "political and civic groups" there in Korea. We can totally see why Apple would want to get in on this biz, a JV with Samsung would basically guarantee them a cheap source of flash memory for future iPods, and according to Reuters they're already in talks with another flash memory maker about a similar venture.
