Is pre-pay HDTV coming soon?
What a way to limit your television habit: pre-pay television. It could become a reality if GreenGrass
proves it to be a viable business and consumer model. GreenGrass is gearing up to go live with a pre-pay content over broadband approach in the next few months. It looks like they're geared towards the UK, with networks like BBC World, ITN, and Revs TV all on board to provide high-quality video.
It's an interesting approach for a few reasons. First off, GreenGrass estimates there are 150 million broadband users worldwide; a number that surely will continue to rise. Second, as a consumer, you only pay for what you consume. Content is available on pay-per-minute basis which, if the model allows, could let you dump a program that doesn't tickle your fancy long before you've paid for the whole show.
GreenGrass indicates this model to be complementary to traditional media, so don't look for all-pay-per-view programming to take over just yet. Does this sound like a viable business model to you as a consumer?
