Dude, there's HD on my IP network!
Telecom company SureWest Communications,
is bringing their high-def over IP out of beta tomorrow. What does that mean? Unless you live in the Sacramento, California area, probably nothing since that's where the roll out is. If you're an HD Beat reader in that vicinity, however, you've got a new HD mechanism in your area via SureWest's FTTP, or Fiber-to-the-Premises network.
My take is that SureWest is already using MPEG-4 compression over today's standard of MPEG-2. According to the company's press release,
they claim that their FTTP network is capable of 10 Megabits per second
(Mbps), although 20 Mbps is optionally available. Since MPEG-2 high-def can require up to 19.3 Mbps, I can't see how SureWest is providing high-def over their IP network with MPEG-2.
Got HD over IP through SureWest? Drop us a note and share with the group; it'll save us a plane ticket to Sacramento!
