Ultimate AV thinks high def DVD war is over

The nail in the coffin for the HD-DVD format might have been the Warner announcement of Blu-Ray support. They didn't drop support for HD-DVD, but like so many other production studios, they're standing with a foot in both camps.

The best point in Ultimate AV's article is one that I've experienced first-hand: the last format war. No, I don't mean Betamax vs. VHS;
there was a more recent format war and I lost because of it. I'm talking about SACD and DVD-Audio. Both had some backwards capability,
both offered superior sounds and ability for extra audio enhancements,
but both really can't survive.

Yes, I have a few SACDs still on my media rack and yes they still play in the SACD player I bought. Go to a music store though and tell me what you see: tons of those "inferior CDs" and not too many SACDs (or DVD-Audio discs for that matter). See, we all lost because the format war didn't let the industry embrace the better sounding digital recordings. I'd hate to see that happen again for the HDTV consumers. I'm curious to hear if you think the format war is basically over as Ultimate AV thinks. I hope they're right, regardless of which technology wins.
