BBC to start HDTV trials next summer

The "beeb" announced
they will have limited release of HDTV broadcasts to their cable and satellite TV subscribers in 2006. This is big news in Europe where the major broadcasters are just starting to get going on HD content, most in preparation for the World Cup soccer matches next year, which the BBC has already said they will show in high definition. At least at first, only a small number of OTA viewers will be able to pick up HD
broadcasts.

British satellite TV provider Sky TV also responded to the announcement positively saying this will help drive customers adoption of the new format and give more choice of programs.
