IBM shows off low-cost 3D TV prototype
IBM is demonstrating what they tout as a low-cost 3D display technology for DLP TVs and projectors. IBM expects that the technology could one day be built into any new DLP
television or home theater (or public presumably)
projectors for less than $20 or retrofitted onto existing projector for a little more than $1,000. Their 3D technology requires source content already written in 3D while the viewer has the privilege of slipping on a pair of wonderfully awkward looking passive polarized spectacles. Meanwhile, Philips and
others have been working on technology which takes 2D
content and displays it as 3D in real-time without the need for special glasses. However, those solutions appear limited at this time to LCD panels which must be fitted with specialized lenses. But better the TV than us,
eh?
