Microsoft to sell upwards of 3 million 360s by year's end?

Microsoft intends to sell 2.75 to 3 million Xbox 360 units by year's end despite reports of a 50% pre-order shortage. The Redmond, Washington company also plans to ship 5 million units worldwide by the end of its fiscal year, June 30.

So was the shortage a publicity stunt? If not and given the lack of currently available units, can Microsoft logistically hit this target?

Update: Microsoft's PR firm (Edelman) is reporting that Microsoft intends to sell 2.75 to 3 million units worldwide by February 2006. This contradicts IGN's "by the end of the year" statement.
