Blu-Ray does DVD-R?
No it's not the title to the last tech-p0rn feature, but it might be a reality. Mike Curtis over at HD for Indies points out something VERY
interesting that appears likely as an addition to the Blu-Ray specification. DVD-Rs with MPEG-2 video may be playable on a Blu-Ray player.
That's interesting for a number of reasons. First off, DVD-Rs are currently read by red lasers, so this would be some hybridization of red and blue. Why do I suddenly have images of Star Wars lightsabers in my head? Anyway, this could open up the opportunity for other red-laser data to operate in the blue-laser world of the future.
Second, does this open up the door for storing high-def content on cheap media that can be played on Blu-Ray players? Ok, you won't be storing much on an 8.5 GB disk, but I have no problem with archiving individual episodes of television on "DVD-masters."
The real question is: is the HD-DVD camp considering any similar mods to their spec? The balance has definitely tipped in favor of Blu-Ray and if HD-DVD doesn't do something soon, they're likely to fall off of the see-saw.
