Blu-Ray bonus content underwhelming
Can someone remind me again why Blu-Ray is going to win this format war? Actually, there are plenty of good reasons, but news like this makes it seem like Blu-Ray is losing a game of "Mother May I?" To win the war, they need to keep moving forward, not back.
Earlier this week, the Blu-Ray brigade gave a little presentation on their format to the press; only thing is: it wasn't that overwhelming. Sure the high-def content is great, but what about the bonus features? The big deal was apparently that you can fit both a widescreen and a fullscreen version of the same movie on a single disc. Uh, guys? Have you seen those "new-fangled" DVDs that fit wide on one side and full on the other? Can you say: several years old?
So it looks like they don't know what to do with all of the extra space on the format. I think we're all tired of the hours of bonus content we've seen for a few years now. The content provides value, so don't get me wrong. However, Blu-Ray (and HD-DVD for that matter) needs to come up with some better use of space to "wow" us. What would you add to a high-def DVD in terms of bonus features to make us go "wow"?
