HDTV in China for 2008 Olympics?
The world's largest consumer market is making strides towards HDTV (and IPTV, for that matter), but they won't be fully transitioned to DTV until long after the U.S. China fully expects that the 2008 Olympics in Beijing will be available in high-def, but the deadline to shut off analog signals doesn't hit until almost two Olympic games later in 2015.
With several billion consumers, I was somewhat surprised to see that China only has 340 million analog sets to replace. That's a large number for sure, but clearly most homes have one set, if any, in China. Either way, a market of this size clearly provides billions of dollars worth of opportunity; a good reason for set manufacturers to start opening up HDTV manufacturing facilities in China.
