Panasonic doubles the Blu-Ray pleasure

Not content to run with the pack, Panasonic announced they're going to offer Blu-Ray discs in the 50 gigabyte capacity. Thanks to a manufacturing modification, Panny is ready for pilot production of the XL-sized BD-ROM discs at their Torrance, California plant.

From the press release, you'd think that this technique was a no-brainer: "readily available inexpensive UV curable resins are used in the creation of the space layer, cover layer and hard-coat, resulting in a reduction in disc replication costs." So, Panasonic has already doubled the capacity of other manufacturers planned product, and they've done so fairly cheaply. We vote for Panasonic as the new head of the Blu-Ray Jedi Order...
