Record HDTV broadcasts direct to DVD: coming soon
Thanks to LSI, who is rolling out a new line of chips for DVD-recorders to become ATSC compliant well ahead of the March 2007 date set by the FCC. The DM8633/83 processors perform the three necessary functions (digital tuner, demodulator and ATSC decoding) on one chip.
The functions you can expect form recorders equipped with these chips:
- DVD archiving w/ adjustable bitrate
- DivX/MPEG-4 encoding and playback
- USB connectivity
- "Direct dubbing" from DV camcorder to DVD
No dual-tuner support however, I guess my DVR has spoiled me. But with DivX-HD and MPEG-4 support, even if you're not jumping straight to Blu-ray/HD-DVD, you should be able to back up an adequate amount of high definition content to a dual layer DVD.
