Philips brings mobile DTV to U.S.
News like this gets me thinking a few years out. You know, when the terms "broadband" and "VGA" aren't used any longer and there's a wireless network all over that we measure in terms of gigabits per second. I can see it now.....mobile high-def television wherever you are.
Until then, we'll have to deal with video on iPods and mobile phones, but it's a start. Philips just announced yesterday that they're bringing mobile video capability to the U.S. with their BGT211 tuner and demodulator for mobile phones. Up to now, most digital TV on mobile devices was limited to foreign markets; due mainly to the differing video standards.
The BGT211 will work on the DVB-H, or Digital Video Broadcast – Handheld, standard here in the U.S. No deets yet on which manufacturers or wireless providers will use the new product, so watch for more news; just not on your cell-phone (yet!)
