HP goes dual-format, will support HD DVD
HP had been
threatening to go HD DVD if Sony didn't add in mandatory managed copy and iHD to the Blu-ray spec, and they've now announced that they will support both formats. Sony did add managed copy, which allows users to store and stream movies they purchase, but balked at iHD, a tech by Microsoft and Disney for interactive functionality on the discs. HP also claims they want to make sure they keep their options open for what consumers demand and what prices dictate, with Toshiba's HD DVD supposed to be
cheaper than Blu-ray out of the gate due to an easier manufacturer transition from good ol' DVD. We've been hearing a good bit of "Blu-ray has already won the format war" type conjecturing, this could muddy the waters a bit.
