He compares the cost of his current cable subscription to downloading shows from iTunes 'ala carte' and the price difference is quite shocking. He is currently spending about $700 a year for cable, and if he were to switch to iTunes only it would cost about $1100.

That is a pretty big difference, not to mention that you can't exactly channel surf on iTunes and stumble on a new show.
