"Vanity" phone numbers growing in popularity, price

Along with the growing popularity of vanity domain names (we're still negotiating with Ethiopian representatives for eng.adg.et) seems to be a rather natural interest by people in acquiring unique or lucky cellphone numbers. This desire for vanity numbers is nothing new–specified landline numbers have been around for years–but the prices that some folks are willing to pay for the
"perfect" number have never been higher. Besides the relatively-cheap 10 to 200 euros per number on new Dutch marketplace Simverkoop.nl (shady types take note: they also rent anonymous numbers for 35 cents/minute) and the
$250-$450 Orange Switzerland charges, textually reports that a person in Bahrain once shelled out over $13,000 for a highly coveted number (9111119) that only seems cool to us because it's a palindrome. And several years ago, in an even more outrageous attempt to throw money away, a Chinese bidder offered over a million dollars for a number that sounds like "let me be rich be rich be rich be rich" when pronounced in his/her native tongue.
