Xbox Live Gold for free!

Wait, there's a small catch. Starting April 1st, Microsoft will be offering 72 hours of free gaming to Silver users who wish to take advantage of Xbox Live Gold. This free weekend of multiplayer action is at least a fair taste of what to expect from the prolonged service. We can thank Verizon for the kind gesture, as they're the ones sponsoring it.

This should be an interesting stress test with all the new users checking it out. Mark your calendars, that weekend will be here before you know it.

[UPDATE: Looks like that was only tentative, according to Mr. Porcaro here. He says, "The Xbox.com team pulled it down, because the dates were tentative, and details of the promotion still haven't been finalized.  We'll share details as soon as we can." I guess we'll just have to wait then.]
