Mobile advertising about to go big-time

Cellphone-based advertising is about to make some significant progress in the coming year, Reuters is reporting, with Viacom being the first company to take the big plunge into this mostly-unchartered territory. The media company, which owns such properties as CBS, MTV, and Comedy Central, is working with carriers to determine exactly what type of advertising consumers will accept, including subsidized video services in exchange for heavier ad presence.
Sprint is one the carriers working with Viacom, and their CTO Barry West envisions ads eventually being tied in to location-based services, providing a very desirable method of targeted delivery for advertisers. Asked when mobile advertising would go mainstream, industry juggernaut WPP's chief executive, Martin Sorrell, responded,
"quickly;" although Sorrell may be biased, his comment still indicates that advertisers have a keen eye on your cellphone.
