Sanyo and Quanta Computer in flat-panel TV joint-venture
Sanyo just announced a joint-venture with Taiwan's promiscuous Quanta Computer who have hit the pages recently in tie-ups with Apple, MIT, and Nicholas Negroponte among others.
Quanta, best known as a contract maker of laptop computers, is taking over Sanyo's lagging TV production arm in hopes of capitalizing on the fast growing flat-panel market. This is certainly good news for investors since the vast majority of Sanyo's 6.5 million television sets still sport CRTs even as the rest of the industry began killing off those legacy sets months ago. The new Sanyo-branded LCDs and plasmas should be ready to roll this summer and hopefully, though not likely, help turn the tide on those mounting Sanyo losses.
