Inklings of another homebrew web browser [Update 1]
It seems the poor DS is being inundated with web browsers from every angle imaginable, much like a boy band member having autograph pads shoved in his face by overanxious teenage girls. With Nintendo's Opera browser due in a few months and a DS Linux browser already available, it seems that browsing the almighty Intertron will soon become just another feather in the machine's already elaborate cap. According to a homebrewer's (is that even a real term?) blog, the first steps of a new browser have been taken after he politely pressured the DS into establishing TCP connections and fetching the source code of various web pages.
What this means is that the DS is able to initiate the three-way handshake protocol (much like your computer does when viewing this page) and establish a connection with a website's servers. The homebrew application in question can only retrieve source code thus far, but it's obviously an important milestone in the creation of another web browser. And if history has taught us anything, you can never have too many of those.
Our tipster points out that the main difference between this potential browser and many other homebrew applications is its use of the TCP standard (which establishes a connection between two hosts before transmitting data packets),
whereas DS Linux's browser uses UDP (which is less reliable and essentially blasts data packets out with less worry). We don't want to delve too deep into the technicalities (though we are aware that some of you would appreciate that), so we'd highly recommend you check out the link, as well as visiting our homebrew
category for more sources of information.
