Video Games good for brain? Me say it not untrue
Not necessarily PS3-specific, but still good news for the gaming community. Research being conducted at McMaster University in Hamilton tries to find a link between video games and our working memory — that is, our short-term memory. What did they find? Memorizing something like a phone number can be done by anybody, gamer or not. But when the last four digits of the number are swapped, gamers were able to adapt and re-memorize that very quickly. Far quicker than the non-gamers, like, 45 milliseconds quicker. With 8% less error. So it's not a huge deal, but there's some sort of link.
Since the tests were done mainly with first-person shooters, perhaps more puzzle-oriented or multi-tasking games would show a stronger link? It would be interesting to pit genre against genre in regards to assisting us in our real world lives. What keeps us sharp? What dumbs us down? Go ahead and leave your thoughts about what genre of gaming would come out on top, or what would be helped the most by any one game. Have fun with it. Metal Gear Solid 3? Hands down, survival tactics. Eating alligator is entirely fair game if abandoned in a jungle. Now you know.
