New Windlight preview released for Second Life [updated]

The First Look release of the Second LifeWindlight project has been updated with a number of bug-fixes wrapped up in a tasty new First Look viewer. What the heck is Windlight all about? Check out our feature on it here.

More details and a list of fixes and changes after the fold. The one that you'll probably most enjoy are fixes to shiny surfaces.

The First Look browser is a beta-test browser that runs against the main (Agni) grid. If it eats your inventory, your files and your dog, that's at your own risk. The viewer will available from the First Look downloads page eventually, but right now the only way to get this new version is via the annoyingly slow built in auto-updater, as you log in - if a viewer download takes you 1-2 minutes with a download manager, the auto-updater will take you at least 15 minutes.

  • VWR-3103: WindLight: Avatar name tags aren't selectable/clickable

  • VWR-3121: WindLight: Texture Memory slider shows negative values on certain configurations

  • VWR-3130: WINDLIGHT - no interpolation/tweening on llSetPrimitiveParams moving attached objects, possibly unattached as well

  • VWR-3139: WindLight: Shiny is too strong and should be more backward-compatible

  • VWR-3162 (Believe fixed - please check this one out!): WindLight: Objects, avatars, and water sometimes disappear after zooming camera

  • VWR-3258: WindLight: Performance drops and triangle rendering glitches on some ATI cards with VBO on

  • VWR-3287: WindLight: Tree lighting appears uneven and harsh during certain times

  • Pop up window for unsupported hardware now comes up

  • Sky tessellation (complexity of sky geometry) now editable on a slider in Graphic Preferences

There are presently 186 open Windlight issues, up from 150 last release.

UPDATE: This release - numbered 1.18.6(74965) - has been yanked and replaced with an earlier numbered 1.18.5(74965) - it appears to be the same code with a different version number. Either that or the new 1.18.6 authentication system failed horribly on the first go-around.
