New Second Life viewer authentication - on hold
Linden Lab's Tess Chu announced this-morning that the new Second Life viewer authentication system currently in testing on 1.18.6 codebases (Release Candidates and First Look Windlight) is "postponed".
Several reasons are given – what it means for Second Life users is that the login system will revert back to the old system, as soon as possible – which may not be all that soon, as apparently it will be a lot of work to put the old login system into the revised codebase and test everything again.
Chu cites the primary causes as:
- Internal projects relying on viewer-auth have been delayed.
- Problems with web servers serving the login page. [heavens, we've seen enough of this lately]
- Unknown cause of crashes at startup.
- LLMozlib's support of frames has caused numerous bugs.
However, Chu implies that that's not the whole list.
It's not clear quite how long the new authentication scheme will be put off, but it seems like it won't be resuming until somewhere around Q2 2008. For many developers this will be something of a relief, as the new authentication system wasn't exactly very welcome.
