Blizzard sees the MMO industry as taken for granted
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz Frank Pearce, senior vice president at Blizzard, clarified how difficult they think the design process is to bring MMO titles to market. As part of a lengthier interview touching on everything from the art style of Diablo 3 to their relationship with Activision, Pearce reflects on the challenges facing companies looking to bring what he describes as "huge, difficult undertakings" to fruition. He continues to say that difficulties in the launch of these games comes as no surprise to him, given the enormous obstacles they've faced in running World of Warcraft.
Their general challenges are heightened, Pearce notes, by their ambition: "Ideally our goal would be to ship one with the regularity of 12 months or so, but we're so ambitious with the type of content that we want to put it makes a difficult challenge, especially when you mix in content patches and developers working on the content patches are the same developers working on the expansions. that's how we maintain consistent quality across that content."
