LotRO player's guide to WoW: Class comparison

In LotRO, the classes are fairly well-defined, with what may seem like an oversaturation of melee-type fighter classes. This point is highlighted by the fact that even the functional magic-user class can wield a sword, and the healers can carry a shield. In WoW though, you have a broader spectrum of classes in essentially the same roles. Let's do a rough comparison of all classes, including those in the new expansions:

  • Guardian: Warrior
  • Champion: Warrior, Paladin
  • Captain: Warrior, Paladin, Death Knight, Shaman
  • Minstrel: Priest, Shaman
  • Lore-master: Shaman, Mage, Warlock, Druid
  • Hunter: Druid, Hunter
  • Burglar: Rogue
  • Rune-keeper: Mage, Shaman, Warlock
  • Warden: Paladin, Hunter

Of course, you could argue all day that there are certain aspects from class A that could be compared to class B, but these are general comparisons to get your foot in the door. LotRO's lore restricts much of the class variety that WoW has, and even saying that a Lore-master could be compared to a Mage might just make a few people's heads explode.
