Know Your LotRO Lore: The Watcher in game
In Lord of the Rings Online: Mines of Moria, we first encounter the Watcher during Volume 2, Book 1, Chapter 8. In this instanced quest, the Watcher will show itself initially by grabbing one of the unfortunate nearby Dwarves in a cut-scene. You'll then find that defeating the behemoth is impossible, and you'll need to regroup and get some better weapons. This is your introduction to Legendary Weapons, and an extremely pivotal time in the game's storyline.
Now, it's important to note that when you arrive at the gate to Moria, it is collapsed with rubble. This is explained by the fact that you are showing up after the Fellowship has made their way in, and after the Watcher has covered the entrance with large stones and brush. It's for this reason that we should realize just how important the Watcher is to the lore and the game. Even though the Fellowship did first try a snowy mountain pass and eventually return to the western Moria entrance as their alternative way across the Misty Mountains, the Watcher made it so they had no other options, once inside.
So there you have it. You're now more informed on the Watcher in the Water, and with this knowledge (and a battle-scarred Legendary Weapon), you may go forth and confront the Watcher once and for all! Look for next week's Know Your LotRO Lore to contain even more from Moria as we delve deeper into Khazad Dum.
