Solo eye for the MMO guy (or gal)
Maybe it's because he recently became a new father (congratulations!). In a post on the BioBreak blog, Syp stands up for soloers everywhere by pointing out some pretty good reasons why this type of gamer has a place in MMOs. That's right, MMOs, as in Massively Multi-player. Seems a bit odd, doesn't it?
It's hard to ignore the shift from forced grouping to solo-friendliness in MMOs that started roughly around 2004, with World of Warcraft, but it begs the question, "Why are you playing an MMO if you want to solo all the time?" According to Syp, there are a number of compelling reasons why people might want to solo and secondly why they would choose to do it in an MMO environment.
His commenters provide some interesting perspectives as well. One player thinks that just because you like to solo doesn't mean you're antisocial. Another suggests that a guild full of soloers wouldn't get much accomplished. A third doesn't mind organized grouping but thinks pick-up groups are a waste of time and would prefer to solo instead. One thing is certain, MMOs have definitely grown by catering to solo gamers.
